Custom Orders
I’m always excited to do a custom order. I do have a limited set of tried-and-true glaze formulas, but am willing to work for a special glaze color or effect if desired. If you’ve seen a piece with the glaze you like on this website then and want that glaze—that makes it easy. Formulating glaze chemistry for high-fire stoneware is a tricky business and trying a new glaze may take a few firings and recalculations to work out any difficulties; but I’m happy to do that too—I learn a lot in the process. Common items like mug-sets or dinnerware sets, planters, pitchers, cups, bowls, plates, casseroles, spigot-pot (3- or 4-gallon drink dispenser), ramekins, nesting bowls, etc., are all possibilities and if you have a wild desire for an ornamental vase or other item, I can likely make it. (I’ve been a potter since 1979.)
A special order will likely take 60 or more to complete and ship. You will then have a truly one-of-a-kind item, signed sealed and delivered piece of pottery that, if taken care of, will likely outlive you.
There are two kiln firings necessary for a completed (vitrified) stoneware form, each requires a fully loaded kiln that can mean three weeks of throwing to fill the kiln. The first firing takes about 12 hours in my Bisque kiln and the second firing takes about 18 hours to fire, and another 24-48 hour to cool. Theres no rushing these processes.
